The president of the Pokémon Company has recently revealed that Gold & Silver were intended to be the last titles in the Pocket Monster series.
“I worked with the assumption that after we put out Gold and Silver, my work as far as Pokémon was concerned would be done,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara.
“I didn’t intend to make any more Pokémon titles. I even thought that once we entered the twenty-first century, it would be time for me to do something else entirely.”
However, due to the success of Pokémon Gold and Silver Ishihara changed his mind and decided to continue making new Pokémon titles.
“Once we’d released Gold and Silver and it was selling even faster than Red and Green, I couldn’t very well get off the ride halfway through saying: “Nice work everyone. Good luck from here on in!”

My circle of friends consider them the last good ones, so it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest; Put proper effort into your last one but go on to do countless others because of high sales.
Well said. It seems near-proof to me that there was a lack of planning and polish going into the development of future titles. Lets hope they go for something a bit different with their next title.
