2K Games have announced that the classic swashbuckling sea-faring adventure, Sid Meier’s Pirates!, will be coming to the Wii. Originally developed by Firaxis Games, the Wii version is being developed by 2K China. Sid Meier’s Pirates! is an adventure-driven game allowing players to roam freely across the ocean, plundering passing ships, collecting secret treasure, building and customising a fleet of ships and even winning the hearts of local noblewomen.

The Wii version will feature two new minigames – bombardment and lockpicking. It will also offer new exclusive ship and character customisation options.

This will be that latest in the franchise, which stretches back to 1987. The original Sid Meier’s Pirates! was released for the Commodore 64 and ported across a variety of platforms, such as the Apple II, Amstrad CPC and the Ataris ST. The game was completely remade by Firaxis (Sid Meier’s development studio) in 2004 for the Xbox and PC. This will be the first time since 1991’s NES port that a Sid Meier’s Pirates! game has been released for a Nintendo platform.
