Wii is now officially the fastest selling console to reach 200,000 units, just 50 weeks since Wii launched. This figure includes all consoles, including hand held units.
A hugely impressive feat. By comparison, it took the PS2 (previous record holder) 55 weeks to get to that figure. Nintendo is the best!
Nintendo also said in October that Wii had achieved sales of 167,899, and before that, the company announced in June that Wii was the fastest-selling console to reach the 100,000 mark. The records just continue to be broken!

Nintendo’s getting set to issue a new update for its Wii Photo Channel, which will bump the application to version 1.1, dropping MP3 playback support, and introducing AAC compatibility, along with shuffle functionality and icon options.
The company’s North American customer service department has said, “…it’s important to note that this is an optional download and is not planned as part of any system updates to Wii. If your Photo Channel currently supports music files in the MP3 format, you can retain this compatibility by electing to not update your Photo Channel to version 1.1.
“Additionally, this update will not have an impact on Wii games which use MP3 music files,” said Nintendo. “These Wii games will not be compatible with AAC files and will continue to use the MP3 file format.”
I don’t think it is necessary. I haven’t used the Photo Channel since launch. Pretty useless for me anyway.

Amidst the myriad of releases since the last Brawl Update that was mentioned on TNB, we now have received news via the Brawl site of something pretty cool.
You can now change the colours of your Brawlers at the character select screen. Go to this link to see some pretty awesome character colour changes, my personal favourites being the change of Fox (to Dark Fox) and Pit (to Golden Angel and Fallen Angel). (screens inside) The option boasts about six colour variations for each character. Now you’ll be able to tell Link from Link!

While many have scoffed at the Wii Zapper for being a useless plastic shell that adds no functionality to the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, there’s little doubt there will be many sold this Christmas. Not only has the market shown useless peripherals can be sold to certain customers (like the plethora of Wii Sports inspired plastic ‘extensions’ littering store shelves), but the Zapper has the distinct advantage of being packed with the discount priced Zelda spin-off Link’s Crossbow Training. But despite the knockout success of certain existing violence-fests already on the platform, some are wary of the Zapper’s potention to hard the Wii’s ‘clean fun’ image.
Quite an interesting argument, doesn’t really look like a gun at all though, and is ultimately pretty useless.

The predictions of industry analysts might not always turn out to be true, but they’re nonetheless interesting, most would agree, especially cases like this one: Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson believes Nintendo has already completed work on a Nintendo DS Lite successor. That is, a redesign.
“Our contacts indicate that a refreshed DS is complete,” Wilson said. “It is thinner (it has no GBA port), has on-board storage and larger screens. However, we do not expect a revamped Wii or DS until sales begin to tail off in all three major geographies.”
Nintendo has yet to comment.

Dead making games, at least. Atari has announced that it is leaving the game production business to concentrate its on publishing and distribution in an effort to save itself. But now the company has had another setback with CEO David Pierce resigning after only being in the job for just over a year. In a move to make back some money, Atari has sold the Test Drive franchise to Infogrames. Previously, Atari sold off its Driver and Stuntman franchises to Ubisoft and THQ but it seems this hasn’t helped. Can this manoeuvre help the company as we know it to survive?

In its latest cover-story scoop, overseas magazine Game Informer has revealed that a Ghostbusters game is on the way to unannounced platforms, at least for the time being.
The magazine hasn’t hit shelves yet, so details are scarce, but its online teaser states that Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are getting back together to make the game, billed as a sequel to Ghostbusters 1 and 2.
Aykroyd and Ramis are collaborating for scriptwriting duties and they’re going beyond just run-of-the-mill voice work. And, Game Informer added, “No, this has nothing to do with the Ghostbusters Zootfly video demonstration that floated around the internet in January.”

In a recent “Wii-k in Review” podcast, Matt Casamassina and Mark Bozon discussed a number of WiiWare details that “they don’t want you to know”. Given that this information has come from developers working with the system, one can only assume that “they” are Nintendo.
Budgets for WiiWare titles are generally $100,000 or below, and developers can either take their ideas directly to Nintendo, or go through the usual publisher route. Many “really weird deals” are currently underway, with companies trying very different models to maximise profit while keeping risk at a minimum.
