Michael Duncan, a senior lecturer in exercise physiology at the University of Derby, has received £5,000 to study the Nintendo Wii’s health benefits.
Duncan will work with school children for six weeks in order to see if the Nintendo Wii game console can improve fitness and fight obesity.
Half the children in the study will play Wii Sports during their lunch break, whilst the remainders take part in regular lunch break activities.
Pupils during the study will carry an accelerometer that measures energy based on movement. Duncan hopes the research will determine if computer games can benefit children.

Rare hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the N64 classics Banjo Kazooie and its sequel being released on the Wii’s Virtual Console, despite their imminent arrival on the Xbox Live Arcade.
When asked of the likelihood that Banjo’s original adventure would appear on VC, a Rare rep has said: “We have no immediate plans to put Kazooie or Tooie on Virtual Console, as you might expect now that they’re both due out on Xbox Live Arcade.”
While it’s not the answer we want, it’s not a definitive no either which leaves us room to hope, and let’s hope Rare’s not just leading us on.
The original Banjo-Kazooie will appear on XBLA on November 26, with Banjo-Tooie to follow early next year.
SEGA has announced a worldwide partnership with High Voltage Software to publish the Wii exclusive game, The Conduit. The Conduit is a visually stunning game made to prove that the Wii can deliver strong visuals almost on par with other next-gen consoles. With its especially made ‘Quantum3′ graphics engine and highly customizable controls, it’s no wonder SEGA would want to publish it.
“The Conduit is one of the most talked-about Wii games this year and High Voltage Software has only scratched the surface of the game in terms of what they have shown so far,” says Simon Jeffery, President of SEGA of America, Inc. “They have proven that graphical and technological innovation can be exciting to the Wii market, and SEGA is thrilled to partner with a team that truly shares our belief in the Wii’s gaming potential beyond the casual market.”
The Conduit is schedlued to be released in Q1 of 2009.
EA have announced that Skate It for Nintendo Wii and DS will be hitting shelves on November 20.
The Wii version features optional Wii Balance Board support, as well as intuitive Wii-mote and nunchuk controls, whereas the DS version will be controlled by the stylus.
Skate It also received the “Best Wii Game” award at this year’s Leipzig Games Convention. Definitely one to add to the Xmas list.
Three NES titles have been released on the Virtual Console today. They are Castlevania 3, Devil World and Ghosts ‘N Goblins.

GAF poster MiketheBSG has had more than $26,000 of electronic items stolen from his home. Nintendo has assisted the man by restoring 228 Virtual Console and 30 WiiWare games to his new Wii.
MiketheBSG said, “By the way, Nintendo, if you don’t know yet, has the greatest customer service ever.”
Nintendo’s support in this situation has proven once again that their customer service is top quality.

Firmware update 3.3 has been released for the Nintendo Wii today. The update has changed the name of Wii Points to Nintendo Points in the Wii Shop Channel. This change has occurred because the Nintendo DSi and its download service will be released next month in Japan.
Those with Freeloaders can expect to be blocked out if they upgrade to the latest firmware, so it is advised to hold off until a patch is released.

Those looking to distinguish their Wii Remote from the rest, can now purchase the new coloured wrist straps that have just been released in Australian stores. Earlier this year many Nintendo Wii owners were experiencing disc read errors whilst playing Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Nintendo responded to the issue with the following statement, “Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. (Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system).”
This resulted in many Wiis with contaminated lens being sent in to Nintendo so they could be cleaned. It now seems Nintendo has grown tired of cleaning Wii lens, and has decided to release an official Wii lens cleaner set to the public.
Apart from the Japanese release (sometime this month) and the retail price of ¥800 (which works out roughly to AU$11), very little is known about the Wii lens cleaner set at this point in time.
