Resident Evil:
The Umbrella Chronicles
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (RE:UC from now on) is the latest effort in Capcom’s Resident Evil series, and this time around it adapts the on-rails FPS (First Person Shooter) control scheme, so forget the puzzle solving and searching elements present in the older games in the series. So, is the new control method as good as the old one? Is it as good as RE:4? Will I stop asking questions on your behalf? Read on to find out.

RE:UC’s plot is centred around telling the story of the other RE games, mainly Resident Evil Zero (the first Resident Evil game) and Resident Evil 3, while also adding a few side missions to explain the origins of the characters. While it’s an alright premise, there really isn’t a need for the plot of the Resident Evil series to be explained anymore than it already is, because, well, it’s not really that complicated. Company tries to make biological weapon. Company fails and turns its workers into zombies. Zombie epidemic ensues. That is the RE plot in its entirety.
Moving on to the actual gameplay, the main idea is pretty good in theory: shoot zombies in the face. When put into practice, however, it isn’t as good as its original premise might have you conceive. Don’t get me wrong, it’s plenty of fun shooting an infinite number of un-dead zombies in their rotting, dilapidated faces, but it doesn’t really stem out further than that. Sure, there are other enemies, such as giant spiders, weird leeches, and other kinds of giant, bloodthirsty creatures, but there is really only one kind of gameplay progression: shoot until everything stops moving, then shoot objects along the way for points, and when you get to the end of a level, shoot an even bigger enemy. And since you can’t move around freely either, it makes for a fairly restricted and repetitious game. It is also fairly easy, but the “Quicktime” events are extremely annoying and quite hard to do in co-op. It’s also quite short, and only took myself and a mate around 6 hours to complete. You can also choose from two characters in each main mission for co-op play, but there is no option for cooperative play in the side missions unfortunately.
As well as the gameplay, the sound is pretty ‘meh’ too. Hearing a voiceover saying “Is that thing human?” about a zombie after you’ve killed about 20 already isn’t very intellectual at all. The BGM is also pretty imaginary, as not much can be heard even at the best of times. Even the sound effects are repetitious and get old quicker than the gameplay.
And, as you may be able to tell from that last sentence, this game is not intended for children to play. It has a high amount of blood and gore and may scare the kiddies.
Overall though, the game is far from perfect, but is still good fun for an hour or so, especially with a mate. If you are an RE fan, you may like it more than I have, and if you are not, you’ll probably still like it as it is one of the only mature games on Wii right now, and is a blast to play with friends.
